Born in West Cornwall, I trained as a first study organist at the Birmingham Conservatoire with George Miles and John Bishop. I studied the piano with the distinguished pianist, Marjorie Hazelhurst. After graduation in 1979 I spent a year at Reading University on the PGCE course. In January 1981 I joined the staff at Wells Cathedral School, principally as organ and piano teacher, acting also as an accompanist for concerts, recitals, examinations and auditions, in addition to playing the organ for school services in the cathedral each week. I am very proud of the fact that several former pupils have gained excellent reputations in the musical world, both as performers and teachers. I remained at Wells until 1987, when I left in order to explore a vocation to the sacred ministry.
Qualifications: GBSM; ABSM (organ teaching); LTCL (organ performing); PGCE.
I enjoy my work as a parish priest, which keeps me well occupied, but I may be able to accommodate a small number of well motivated pupils. I enjoy teaching and am particularly keen to encourage young organists, not least because of the relatively small number of those who wish to learn, and the general lack of opportunity for those who do. I owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to the fine teachers who inspired me, and am passionate about the importance of encouraging new generations in the same way.
Music continues to play a large part in my life. I have a fine grand piano and a digital organ in my house, as well as access to various church organs in the area.
